STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
Everyone at some point wants to get into shape or be in better shape. Committing yourself to an exercise and a nutritional program that involves change is hard. There are several components that you can put into place to help you be successful. As a trainer in the industry for over 35 years, going from owning and operating four big health clubs to strictly personal training in a private facility I have seen many people succeed and many people... not so much. The following are some of my thoughts on what it takes to become successful with your fitness program.
DO THE DUE DILIGENCE OF FINDING A GOOD TRAINER: Even if you cannot afford a trainer long term, start with one who knows how to help you set up a program that you can maintain on your own. The investment of a few sessions to learn the techniques and proper form are well worth it and will help prevent injury. There are alot of choices out there for trainers and training facilities. Everyone can have a title or a certification but interview the trainers and see who seems like a good fit for you. Do your personalities mesh. Is your trainer going to be your best cheerleader. Does the trainer use free weights and/or machines. Is the facility well equipped and clean. What other services are available to you at the facility to help you with your fitness plan. What is the support structure like outside of your training appointments.
PLAN AHEAD: Be prepared to plan the time you are going to work out and put it into your schedule. Plan your meals so that the nutrition end of your success is well thought out.
Plan the financial committment you are going to make for a trainer, health club membership, the extra groceries and the new clothes you will want to buy when you get into fantastic shape!!
RESTRUCTURE YOUR DAILY HABITS: If you are sabatoging your nutritional component by eating late at night, what can you do to change that. If your family time doesnt consist of plenty of outside play, add that into your day so that you are burning calories while spending time with your family. If you cant find the time to exercise after work, get up an hour early and 'get er done' before you go to work or start your day. Mom's have a way better chance of fitting in exercise if they do it before their day starts and the kids wake up or you have to go to work. Statistics bear out that if you wait until evening you are more likely to blow it off .
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE: We have a sign in our wellness center that says "Life is a self fulfilling prophecy, winners expect to win in advance". Get the negative Nellies out of your daily routine and you have a better chance of being successful AND happier. Share your feelings with your spouse and/or family members and get them on board with supporting you and keeping you pumped up. All the feelings that you will experience with this journey need to be shared with someone in your life who is non judgemental and can help keep your confidence up. I cant stress this enough. POSITIVITEY BREEDS POSITIVITEY. NEGATIVITY BREEDS NEGATIVITY.
POSITIVE SELF TALK AND VISUALIZATION: I have always been a believer and have used positive self talk and visualizing with myself and my clients. When I was a gymnast in college I visualized my routines. When I was a powerlifter, I visualized my lifts and seeing the three green lights that meant a successful lift. When I was a competitive bodybuilder I visualized my routines, my compulsories, my stage presence and how I would act and feel. I saw myself accepting my trophies. I always tell my clients to go into the bathroom alone, take off all your clothes and take a good hard look at your physique, front, side and back. Visualize how you want yourself to look. How do you want to feel. Then see yourself reaching those goals. Remember... WINNERS EXPECT TO WIN IN ADVANCE.
